My dear friend Kristie made these amazing halloween costumes for her family last year, and asked me if I'd come take a few pics of them all dressed up. How could I not? Look how cute they are! And seriously, Kristie is not only an amazing hair stylist, she is a super-talented and creative seamstress, loving and devoted mother and wife and one of the most thoughtful and kind-hearted people I've ever had the pleasure of meeting!

Hi there...my little guy is 4 months old! Wowza time is flying by! I have been slacking in photographing his loveliness...and so today I took advantage of the great window light in my living room and rigged up a back drop using a blanket draped across our train table and hanging over two chairs... It's easy to do...try it! Practice with your kiddos... Find good light, and GO FOR IT! :) Ok, enough babbling...here is my sweet Aleksander...

Please nominate a family who you think is deserving of this gift. There aren't really any guidelines, but for example, it could be someone who has fallen on hard times or someone who you just really admire.

The winning family must be able to meet me within 20 miles of Huntington Beach for their session, and the session must be completed by August 31, 2012.

All of the nominations will be carefully considered and the winner will be determined by a special,

and impartial panel of judges. (not ME!)

"Last Christmas we were nominated to win a photography session with Shari. When we won, I couldn't believe it. I was so excited to take our pictures, because Shari does amazing work. I hadn't had our family pictures taken in four years, and our oldest is now a senior and going off to college in the fall. Our family pictures won't quite be the same after this. It means so much to have these photos, a small snapshot in our family's life before things change. We had some challenges the day we took our pictures; the Huntington Beach pier was crazy busy so we went to Seal Beach instead. My kids were so annoyed and I really would have liked to throttle them all (well mainly the teenagers). Look at this cute couple, so in love! Jim and Jackie came in town from Utah to visit their new granddaughter! Seal Beach is near and dear to their hearts, so we planned to meet there under the pier. Well...unfortunately the beach was closed because they were bulldozing all the sand! We decided to go for it anyway, thinking the worst that could happen would be that they tell us to leave. So we ventured down in the sand, and just as we were about to cross the path of the construction trucks, a life guard truck pulled up and stopped us. Jackie explained that they were visiting from out of town, and that she really, REALLY wanted a few shots under the pier... The life guard (Lori) was so helpful! She called her supervisor and we got permission to grab a few photos and then get outta there! I am so happy it worked out... Jim and Jackie...here's a peek at our session!

It's hard to believe that I took this little cutie's newborn pics just a few short months ago! Look how big she's getting! And oh, so darling! Her mama has had a picture like this taken of each of her kiddos, all around the same age...in fact, I took her big brother's pic a few years ago! We were talking about how sweet it will be to see them all displayed together...the 3 boys, and then the little sister with a cute bow on her head! I love the sparkle in her eye, and she just has the sweetest smile ever! Thanks baby Hope! It's so fun to see you grow!

Meet the Dahl family! I photographed their little girl Charlotte when she was a newborn...and boy, how time flies! She's a big 2 year old now, AND a big sister! Meet the Jensens...such a beautiful family! I adore their smooth, caramel skin and dark brown eyes! Watch out girls! I kept assuring Tracy that even though they seemed bored and uncooperative at times, that we would get some great shots. And here is proof! We shot at the pier in Seal Beach, and the light was so beautiful, the subjects were gorgeous...how can you go wrong with that combo??? Enjoy...

Sam was great to photograph! She was willing to try whatever I asked her to try, and has the most beautiful, sparkling brown eyes!

The day we met for photos was also the first day of the Festival of Children at South Coast Plaza...little did I know! So it was crazy there...PLUS my phone decided to break that day, and so I had NO way of calling them to find out where they were! Right when I was about to give up and go home, I decided to go back and look one more time. And thankfully Sam was patiently waiting for me up on the bridge and needless to say we were both relieved! :)

Remember the adorable baby from the cake smash pictures? Well, here is his sweet family! I first met them almost 2 years ago when they invited me to photograph Nicholas's 2nd birthday party. Now their family has grown and Christopher is already 1! I have to hand it to Tara for being such a trooper and looking so happy in these pictures -- you would NEVER guess that she had a migraine! Being a migraine sufferer myself, I totally understand how miserable they make you, and give her some serious props for pushing through for her family pics! This is one of my husband's older brothers and his family. We were all in Utah together for a family reunion, and they came all the way from Hawaii and Florida! I had so much fun photographing Christopher on his 1st birthday! This was also my first "cake smash" photoshoot and even though he wasn't really digging the idea at first, his daddy came to the rescue and got some good smiles out of him! I just had to showcase 2 of my favorites -- 1 showing pure joy...and a few seconds later, crying! Ahhh, the fleeting emotions of babies!

I first met Lisa and Abby 2 years ago for portraits down at Crystal Cove...and was so excited when she contacted me again to let me know they were coming out to California! I was even more excited to find out that this sweet mother-daughter duo has expanded into an awesome family of 6! I was so thrilled to meet Matthew and his 3 kids, and to see how happy they all are together!

They live in Joplin, Missouri, and thankfully were spared by that terrible tornado that ripped through there recently! It was chilling to hear them talk about the utter destruction...but also heart warming to hear about people lending a hand whenever and wherever they could to help those who lost their homes, or even worse, their loved ones.

This time we met for family pics down at the Balboa Fun Zone...on a typical June Gloomy morning, but still managed to have tons of fun together and get some great shots. Here is a peek at our session!

I'm so excited for my nephew and his beautiful fiancee! I have to admit its still a little strange for me to see him so grown up and taking such a huge step in life like getting married! I guess I am getting older, but still picture him as a teenager, even though he is quite grown up and pretty darn close to the same age I was when I got married! Wanna know something funny about Lexi? Brad, my husband, used to BABYSIT her! So, you can imagine how weird it is for him to see her all grown up and in love! We are thrilled for them and can't wait for their wedding in July.

They were so much fun to photograph and were very willing to do whatever I asked...as well as plenty of other fun stuff that they came up with on their own! It was really hard to narrow it down (I love so many of these images!) but, here's a not-so-brief preview of their session...

It's about time I post some recent work, right? I am 99% sure I'm over morning sickness...so that means I will be much more productive now! YAY! New website and pricing is almost complete...so keep a look out for some fun giveaways in the near future when I unveil the new site!

So, are these kids gorgeous or what??? They haven't had any portraits together since Travis was itty-bitty...and so they were well overdue to get some great photos together. I love seeing siblings interact together, and these guys are so chill and laid back...it was really fun photographing them! Carley and I got together last year for her senior pics...so she's pretty much a pro model by now in my opinion! Anyway...here is a glimpse at our session together...hope you like 'em!

make it fabulous! removing a chapped lip ring

When you have a lot to work with, it’s easy to make a picture look fabulous! Look at this sweet little angelic face! Gorgeous complexion, sparkling blue eyes and sweet ruby red lips.

OH! WAIT! Look at that chapped area under his lip! AHHH! How do we get rid of that?

Select the Patch Tool (located in the drop down of the spot healing brush tool menu) it’s the one that looks like a little patch.

Then I drew around part of his chapped skin under his lip, then dragged the selection down to a clear patch of skin. The Patch Tool will magically turn that chapped area into nice, smooth clear skin – just like the area I dragged it to!

I continued doing this until I cleaned up the entire red, chapped area. I also used the patch tool to eliminate the food crusties in the corner of his lip and the little white spots on his chin.

Next, I used the Spot Healing brush to eliminate that tiny little scab by the corner of his eye.

Now that his small blemishes have been removed, I want to soften his skin just a little bit, so I use TRA’s ProRetouch on his cheeks and a little bit on his chin at about 45% opacity.

Then I use the Eye Bump (part of ProRetouch) and with a really small brush size, at 100% opacity, I highlight the catch lights in his eyes. Then I reduce the opacity to 25% and lighten the whites of his eyes, and then reduce it to 10% opacity and lighten the irises of his eyes.

Next I run a Curves action (Curves Midtone Lighter at 60% from the Phaunt Fun Pack) to give it a bit more dimension and pop.

At this point I think the right side (my right) of his face is still just a tad dark, so I use TRA’s Yin/Yang tool, and first I use Yin (lighter) at 10% and with a larger brush, I brush over his eye and side of his face, just to lighten it a bit.

Then I use Yang at 20% with a large brush to darken the right side of the image, just brush back and forth around the corners and edges to darken it a bit.

Now, I think I need to tweak the color just a bit, it seems too red to me. So, I go to Image>Adjustments>Color Balance. Keep Midtones selected and slide the top bar over to the Cyan side to -5. Then slide the bottom bar over to the Yellow side at -5. Then select Highlights and slide the bottom bar over to the Yellow side at -2. I usually uncheck and check the “preview” box a few times to make sure I like the result.

Even after adjusting the colors, I still feel like it needs to be a bit softer…so I use an action called “Seventies” from Pioneer Woman, at 15% -- This gives it a slightly yellowish tint and adds the softness I’m looking for.

Then, I use TRA’s Boutwell’s Magic Glasses at 50% and save my final image.

Voila! We have a FABULOUS image! Compare the before and after!

wow, i can't believe a whole week has gone by since my last post! i have been meaning to post more frequently, but time just keeps slipping away from me!

however, i have my 2nd Make It Fabulous post ready to share with you today...and hopefully some of what i share will help you out!

this image was shot in my tiny little apartment, using the light from the window, and a black blanket as a backdrop...

I used a 50mm prime lens, at f1.4, 1/80 and ISO 800 (it was actually quite dark b/c it was late afternoon, that is why i used a higher ISO)

After opening the image in Camera Raw, this is what I adjusted:

Bump up contrast to +40

Bump up clarity to +15

Bump up vibrance to +5

Adjust curves to “Strong contrast”

Then, open in Photoshop.

To get rid of that bluish spot at the top, I Used the Clone Stamp Tool at 100% opacity and sampled a spot that was completely black (alt + click on the area you want to sample)

and then I brush over the bluish spot and turn it black.

Just crop it – I personally like how it looks cropped better anyway.

There was just too much black at top and bottom before.

I already knew I wanted this in black and white, so I then I go to Image>Adustments>Black and White. Then I adjust the reds to 10% and yellows to 75% -- this darkens the reds a bit and lightens the yellows, making his skintone more even and less splotchy in black and white.

Flatten, sharpen and save!

I've been wanting to describe how I edit for a while...for any of you out there who wonder how I get to my final product...there's a lot that goes on behind the scenes once I stop shooting and you go home from your session.

I'm usually so excited to see the images that I browse through them on the LCD screen on my camera before I even make it home! Then once I'm home, I upload them to my hard drive and then I select my favorite images to edit.

I don't always get it exactly right IN CAMERA, so thankfully I have an amazing tool for post-processing called Photoshop CS5. :) I also shoot in RAW which allows me a bit more wiggle room as well.

So, every Friday I am going to post a "Make It Fabulous" image from start to finish to show you how I edit. I am NOT a photoshop expert, however, I have learned a lot in the past few years and would love to be help any of you if I can! I learned a TON from all of the friendly photogs out there who take the time to share their knowledge online...and I hope that I can give back, even just a little bit!

So, here's how I took this underexposed (but still beautiful!) image to it's final edit:

1. In Camera Raw I adjust a few of the sliders...

exposure: +0.50
fill light: 10
blacks: 5
brightness: +45
contrast: +50
clarity: +15
vibrance: +12

I also warmed up the temperature a little bit.

2. Next, I open the image in Photoshop. I usually adjust my levels first. Go to the Image menu, then choose Adjustments, then Levels. Here I just very slightly lightened the midtones and darkened the the shadows.

3. I use a lot of Totally Rad Actions so from now on I will just refer to them as TRA + the name of the action. TRA Yin/Yang -- Yin=lighter, Yang=darker. I used Yin with a soft brush on a very low opacity (about 10) under her eyes and then even lower at about 2 over her entire face and neck. Then I used Yang at about 25% opacity to darken the grass/weeds around her so that she would pop out a bit more as the focus in the image.

4. TRA ProRetouch -- I try really hard not to make people look like they have plastic skin or alien-sharp eyes...so I use pro-retouch sparingly. I put it on about 10% opacity and used it to smooth out her skin and then used the eye bump to highlight ONLY the highlighted areas in the iris of her eye...I think this gives the eyes just enough light to make them sparkle!

5. I'm done! Sharpen and save!!! At this point I will usually convert to black and white when I'm editing a gallery....so, here's the black and white + a hint of sepia...

When I'm editing photos, I always listen to music. I mostly listen to my playlist from my personal blog...but I also really enjoy all of the FREE dowloadable playlists from Urban Outfitters.

Music helps energize me and also keeps my creative juices flowing...I think it can also break up the monotony of resizing proofs and uploading galleries.

Meet Treven...baby boy #5 to my friend Jaclyn! Such a sweet little guy! Jaclyn was a trooper and we shot my first ever session in my little apartment! Luckily I get pretty good light reflected off the building next to us, so I think it all worked out OK! You would NEVER know that we were in my messy living room, right?? :) That is the beauty of newborn photography...you can pretty much create a studio anywhere!

All I want for Christmas is ~~my two front teeth~~ a Kelly Moore Bag! Seriously, after spending hours browsing online, and googling camera bags, I kept coming back to Kelly Moore Bags!

Then my husband sent me a text yesterday (unaware that I had even been thinking about a new bag) and asked what kind of new camera bag would I want?

So, we browsed together, read all about all kind of bags, looked at like 2 bajillion pictures of bags and kept coming back to Kelly Moore!

So, now that I've narrowed it down to which company I like -- the hard part is going to be choosing a style and color!!!!!!

What I like about the B-Hobo and the Posey is that I could easily use either one of them as my regular purse...I especially love the built-in wallet feature of the Posey. And I guess the B-Hobo bag is SUPER popular because many of them are SOLD OUT but will be available next Spring.

When my family was photographed by Natalie Norton this summer, she was carrying the mustard yellow Kelly Boy bag...and Brad and I both really like the style and size of that bag as well! It's so hard to decide!

We were at an elementary school and we took a picture of him standing over each letter of his name (blurred out to protect his identity -- but you get the idea!) - and I love how his expression changed each time we moved to a new letter. This is one special little guy...I just love him! I love his little man hair, and his sweet brown eyes. He was having so much fun running around being a rocket...one of my favorite moments was when he had to stop and refuel...so smart! He's amazingly talented at making rocket blaster sounds!
